Job Description
Position Overview:

The  Safety Engineer provides project engineering support for safety and ergonomic improvements in the Operations department, oversees the CPI Safety Committee, and supports company-wide safety initiatives.
 
 
Essential Job Functions:
 
  • Manages safety and ergonomic projects. Coordinates outside services and internal resources to facilitate the design, fabrication and installation of safety equipment.
  • Leads process improvement teams. Utilizes Lean Manufacturing principles and works closely with Operations personnel to develop standardized work methods for new/existing processes.
  • Leads the CPI Safety Committee. Facilitates safety meetings and oversees committee activities including incident investigations; accident and near-hit reporting; internal safety audits and hazard assessments; department safety talks; training events; incentive programs; and other company-wide initiatives to increase safety awareness and reduce the risk of occupational injuries.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources and the workers compensation insurance carrier as necessary to manage claims and to develop/maintain loss control strategies.
  • Participates in EHS audits and collaborates with QA and Regulatory personnel in response to audit findings.
  • Reviews and updates safety policies such as LOTO, confined space, and the Verona facility contingency plan for emergency situations such as fire, severe weather, spills of hazardous materials, or uncontrolled chemical reactions.
  • Leads safety training events as necessary. Conducts respirator fit tests for Operations employees and annual training for authorized LOTO employees in Operations.
  • Engages others in continuous improvement efforts by providing coaching, training, teamwork, and floor-level communication.
  • Develops and maintains reporting tools (metrics) to monitor progress of CPI safety initiatives.
 
Required Qualifications:
 
  • Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Occupational Safety, or other related degree program.
  • Minimum of 2 years in related work experience, preferably in a cGMP manufacturing environment.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive process improvement initiatives from concept through execution.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and other safety requirements in a pharmaceutical or chemical manufacturing setting, including the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) and other plant safety and ergonomic programs.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and presentation skills. Professionalism in working relationships with employees, clients, outside services, auditors, and insurance representatives. Ability to influence, motivate, coach, and train a wide array of plant personnel.
  • Strong written communication and PC skills including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel; with familiarity in PowerPoint and Access preferred).
  • Ability to prioritize multiple work assignments and drive tasks to completion with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
 
  • Previous EHS leadership experience and OSHA 10 Hour/40 Hour General Industry training is preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Visio and AutoCAD is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Quality Management Systems and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) in a FDA-regulated environment is preferred.
  • Experience utilizing Lean Manufacturing tools is preferred (e.g. value stream mapping, standardized work, total productive maintenance, kaizen, 5S, point of use storage, quick changeover, etc.).
