About:
The Urban League of Greater Madison, incorporated in 1968, seeks a president and chief executive officer to lead its programs and personnel in serving the populations of Dane County (500,000), which includes Madison, Wisconsin.  The Greater Madison affiliate has gained a reputation as an organization that offers a growing array of vital and innovative programs to its diverse constituency of African Americans and other members of our community.   The Urban League is one of Dane County’s oldest and largest community & economic development organizations. In 2013, the Madison affiliate earned an Outstanding Affiliate rating by the National Urban League. Over the last four decades, the Urban League of Greater Madison has helped more than 40,000 families and individuals of all ages secure better jobs, educational opportunities, and improved quality of life. Our mission is to ensure that African Americans and other community members are educated, employed and empowered to live well, advance professionally and contribute to the common good in the 21st Century.

Candidates for the position of President/CEO should hold a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in business administration, non-profit management, public administration or an appropriate alternate discipline.  They should have achieved a successful track record of leadership and management in community-based organizations with at least five years of senior non-profit or for profit management experience. This experience should include strategic planning, fundraising, fiscal administration, human resource administration, community and public relations, and vision and advocacy.

About the Position: 
The Affiliate Chief Executive Officer, under the direction of the Affiliate Board of Directors, is responsible for the strategic development and implementation of its programs and personnel, serving the populations of Dane County (500,000).  The Chief Executive Officer:
 
  • Serves as the chief administrator and is responsible to the Board of Directors/Trustees.
  • Demonstrates the ability to develop, articulate and communicate a vision for the local affiliate.
  • Provides leadership to the organization, administering its functions and operations.
  • Provides financial leadership for the organization, including driving membership, creating value-added member services and sponsorship, and developing other strategies for income generation.
  • Assists in the development of short- and long-range objectives, plans and policies for the approval of the Board.
  • Plans, administers, and monitors the day-to-day operations of the affiliate.
  • Acts as principal spokesperson, in conjunction with the Board President, representing the needs and interests of the affiliate.
  • Generates new ideas and lead through completion.
  • Initiates and maintains relationships with staff, board, political, corporate and community leaders.
  • Keeps abreast of issues facing the African-American and minority community.
  • Establishes agenda items and outlines each into action items for completion.
  • Forms a disciplined approach to achieving goals and objectives.
  • Engages in dialogue across race, gender, sexual orientation, economic, and other differences.
Successful Candidates Will Possess Skills In:
 
  • Strategic Planning
     
    • Conduct research and then produce goods and services that meet community and constituents’ needs.
    • Assist in development and implementation of a strategic plan.
    • Attract, develop, and leverage the board in support of the affiliates mission and goals.
  • Fundraising
    • Assist the board in establishing, developing and achieving fund raising strategies and programs.
    • Identify funding resources to ensure a positive impact on affiliate finances, such as the United Way, proposals to funding sources, annual campaigns, corporate solicitations, etc.
    • Articulate and show results achieved by the affiliate to funding sources.
  • Fiscal Administration
    • Assist the board in strategic financial planning and development of affiliate budget.
    •  Provide complete, accurate and timely financial reports to board and funding sources.
    • Implement systems of internal controls to safeguard agency funds; ensure fiscal accounting and reporting in accordance with standards of accounting for voluntary non-profit organizations and agencies.
  • Human Resource Administration
    • Assists in the development and implementation of personnel policies including benefits.
    • Exercises authority for the selection, training, and corrective action of staff within the   limit of policy and budget.
    • Maintain confidentiality of personnel information, actions, and records.
  • Community/Public Relations
    • Assist the board in the development and implementation of a public relations strategy designed to communicate the mission, programs, and services to the community.
    •  Act, in conjunction with the Board Chairperson, as the principal spokesperson for the affiliate; ensure affiliate mission, programs, and services are communicated to the community.
    • Maintain relationship with community groups and agencies; ensure activities of the affiliate are coordinated with appropriate groups which impact the community.
  • Vision and Advocacy
    • Generates enthusiasm in building a compelling vision of the affiliate, and solicits support from key stakeholders and constituents.
    • Empower and engage others, through shared leadership activities, to manage stress associated with changing the vision of the affiliate.
    • Keep abreast of legislation affecting the affiliate constituents and participate in policy development and debate, affecting constituents and stakeholders.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred, in business administration, public administration, education, social work, human resource administration, finance, or a related discipline.
  • Five years experience in business management, personnel management, strategic planning, fiscal management, program development and administration, or a combination of the above.
  • Two years of experience working with a volunteer board or other demonstrated community leadership experience.
  • Management and supervisory experience.
  • Proposal writing.
  • Organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, planning and evaluation skills, and general management skills.
