The Department of Surgery at The University of Wisconsin is recruiting a dynamic and exceptional academic cardiothoracic surgeon to lead our Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. The Division Chair will lead and direct successful clinical, research, and education programs that span the breadth of the wide-ranging field of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin includes 11 full-time academic faculty who provide a unique multidisciplinary approach to the study, evaluation, and treatment of acquired and congenital cardiovascular and thoracic diseases, including heart and lung transplantation as well as benign and malignant disorders of the thorax. The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery has robust support from 22 APP, 14 certified perfusionists, 3 full-time data managers and a physician-scientist.

The Division proudly provides excellent clinical care across the spectrum of adult and pediatric cardiovascular and thoracic disease. The three sections of the Division include Adult Cardiac Surgery, Congenital Heart Surgery, which treats patients of all ages, and General Thoracic Surgery.

Education within the Division includes a commitment to medical students and General Surgery residents and an ACGME-approved traditional three-year Cardiothoracic residency. The Division also offers a non-accredited fellowship in Thoracic Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support.

The UW Department of Surgery consists of more than 160 faculty across eleven specialty Divisions, performing more than 25,000 operations annually. The Department also trains more than 70 residents and fellows and is consistently ranked amongst the top Surgery programs with extramural research funding, currently 7th in the nation according to Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research.

The Department provides a robust infrastructure of services including academic resources such as The Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR), which provides support, resources, and a collaborative environment to facilitate surgical health services research at the University of Wisconsin. The Department's Office of Clinical Research provides 24/7, 365 day a year clinical trial coordinator support for Clinical Trials as well regulatory support for research, and the grants management team provides comprehensive pre-award to post- award support. The Surgical Collaborative of Wisconsin also provides access to a network of surgeons throughout the state and this platform provides opportunities for collaborative quality improvement that improves the care of surgical patients throughout the state and region.

Management and Leadership (30%)
- Recognized and accomplished Cardiac and/or Thoracic surgeon with success in scholarly pursuits
- Ability to develop effective relationships with health system and local clinical and administrative leaders to advance the goals and objectives of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Experience and success in leading, managing and participating in multidisciplinary teams
- Track record of creating sustainable budgets and responsible fiscal oversight

Clinical, Research and Education Activity (50%)
- Demonstrated record of successful clinical practice as well as excellence in research and education
- Capacity to further grow and enhance the research and educational missions of the Division including attraction of strong fellowship candidates.
- Clinical activities will correlate with the incumbent's surgical sub-specialty in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
- The chairperson will participate in training of medical students, residents, and fellows, and will be expected to provide high quality care to the patients of UW Health.

Clinical Program and Faculty Development (20%)
- Creating and enhancing clinical programs and service lines with attention to engaging vulnerable, underserved or marginalized patient populations
- Expertise and influence to lead across multiple service lines inclusive of complex cardiac and thoracic aortic programs, congenital cardiothoracic, thoracic transplantation (adult and pediatric), thoracic oncology and ECMO
- Aligning clinical care pathways across multiple care locations
- Provide effective mentorship for junior faculty as evidenced by their growing regional and national influence and participation

The successful applicant will participate in the administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.

Candidate is required to have or be eligible for a Wisconsin Medical License. Active certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery is required. Must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges.

Applicants should have a history of successful clinical program development and a demonstrated track record of scholarship and leadership as an academic cardiothoracic surgeon. Candidates must possess clinical and academic credentials sufficient for appointment at the Tenure Track rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Appointment as Associate Professor or Professor will require that candidate's credentials meet criteria for rank established by the School of Medicine and Public Health and UW-Madison guidelines.
