Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE

The Engineer Electric Distribution will provide technical knowledge and expertise for Madison Gas and Electric Company (MGE) to plan, design, construct, and maintain the electric distribution system with a focus on safety, compliance, reliability, and customer satisfaction.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs the necessary engineering, design, and oversight for overhead, underground, and network distribution system improvement projects.
  • Works closely with other MGE departments and outside entities to plan, design, schedule, and coordinate Company projects according to customer schedules.
  • Assists in specifying the applications for distribution automation equipment.
  • Develops and evaluates emerging smart grid technologies.
  • Assists in designing systems to interconnect large-scale customer- and utility-owned Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into the distribution grid.
  • Investigates and recommends new distribution equipment, engineering and construction standards, and work process improvements.
  • Analyzes road plans generated by City, County, and State agencies and designs job orders to relocate overhead and underground distribution facilities where needed.
  • Negotiates agreements and utility easements with customers to design the most cost-efficient and environmentally friendly distribution extensions, circuit ties, and service facilities.
  • Maintains knowledge of appropriate safety codes (NESC and Wisconsin Administrative Code), governmental codes such as PSCW requirements, Company rules and regulations, and Company construction standards.
  • Investigates and remedies power quality issues such as stray voltage, radio interference, harmonics, and voltages complaints.
  • Provides technical collaboration to other engineers and engineering technicians within the department.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in electrical or civil engineering required.
  • At least one to three years of electric distribution engineering experience is preferred.
  • Able to work toward designation as a Professional Engineer in Wisconsin is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Valid State of Wisconsin driver's license.
  • Strong knowledge of electricity, electrical utility systems, and the Company's electric distribution system.
  • Strong engineering skills.
  • Able to read, understand, and interpret a wide variety of drawings, maps, and sketches.
  • Familiar with a wide variety of technical systems and software.
  • Strong time and project management skills with the ability to plan, organize, and control multiple projects simultaneously while adapting to changing construction schedules and customer requirements.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Able to work independently with moderate supervision.
  • Various training in areas such as State of Wisconsin Electrical Code, customer satisfaction, electric utility systems operations, hazardous waste management, personal computer and software, defensive driving, and CPR/First Aid.

JOB LOCATION

The position is hybrid, and office days are in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, where MGE is an active participant in community efforts to preserve the area's extraordinary quality of life.
