Perkins Coie is seeking a qualified, dynamic individual to play an integral role in the firm's legal talent development efforts supporting the evaluation and development of associates, counsel, non-partnership track attorneys, and patent agents as the Senior Attorney Development Manager. Reporting to the Director of Attorney Development, the position also collaborates closely with talent advisors, practice directors/managers, the diversity and inclusion team, the compensation team, HR counsel, and others to ensure a positive and inclusive experience as it relates to learning, development, integration, evaluation, and promotion.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

These essential functions are primary job duties that incumbents must be able to perform unassisted or with some reasonable accommodation.

Performance Evaluation

  • Oversee the evaluation, feedback, and promotion processes for associates, counsel, non-partnership track attorneys, and patent agents. Ensure evaluations are delivered in a timely, fair, and equitable process.
  • Manage, implement, and document policies, procedures, and practices related to the evaluation, feedback, and promotion processes. Develop and recommend policies, procedures, and practices as necessary, including revisions to the evaluation, self-evaluation, and related materials.
  • Integrate professional and legal skills competencies into the evaluation, feedback, and promotion processes.
  • Manage and draft communications related to the evaluation, feedback, and promotion processes. Problem-solve and respond to questions about these processes from all stakeholders. Serve as a liaison to practice group chairs, subgroup leaders, office managing partners, talent advisors, practice directors/managers, the diversity and inclusion team, HR counsel, and others.
  • Manage and facilitate the work of the evaluation committees. Advise the Associate & Counsel Evaluation Committee chair and the chair of the evaluation committee for non-partnership track attorneys and patent agents on policies, procedures, and practices related to the evaluation and promotion processes. Manage the Associate & Counsel Evaluation Committee orientation and training. Serve as the key point of contact for individual committee members.
  • Plan and manage the annual Associate & Counsel Evaluation Committee meeting. Oversee documentation of discussions, decisions, and action items. Follow up on development, performance management, and related matters with firm leaders, talent advisors, HR counsel, the compensation team, and others.
  • Oversee audit of supervisors' written feedback, drafting of development statements, and delivery of evaluations.

Mentoring & Feedback

  • Foster a culture of mentoring and enhance mentoring programs.
  • Foster a culture of feedback and ensure associates, counsel, non-partnership track attorneys, and patent agents receive actionable feedback to achieve their development goals. Manage implementation of feedback tools, resources, and initiatives.
  • Design and deliver training related to mentoring and feedback.

Associate & Counsel Integration

  • Manage integration program for associates, counsel, non-partnership track attorneys, and patent agents, including enhanced orientation program and social and workflow integration. Manage responsible partner and first-day assignment programs. Develop related content and resources. Partner with key internal departments and stakeholders to ensure a successful integration program.

Associate & Counsel Committee

  • Manage and facilitate the work of the committee. Support and serve as a liaison to the Associate & Counsel Committee, manage agendas and communications with committee members. Manage quarterly meetings with all associates and counsel.

General

  • Assess the effectiveness of processes and programs. Use metrics and data to make continuous improvements.
  • Monitor and report on industry trends related to evaluations, feedback, promotion, mentoring, and development. Oversee technology tools and systems and potential technology solutions related to evaluation, feedback, and mentoring.
  • Supervise evaluation team members, including the evaluation process manager.

This position is hybrid and requires the ability to work in the office as business needs necessitate.

This position may require travel and flexibility with working hours.

SPECIFIC SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Knowledge of law firm attorney professional development and performance evaluation, feedback, and promotion processes.
  • Outstanding communication skills, critical thinking, and initiative.
  • Sound judgment and discretion to handle, protect, and maintain sensitive and highly confidential information.
  • Supervisory and collaboration skills.
  • Advanced Microsoft Suite skills.

SPECIFIC SKILLS PREFERRED

  • Knowledge of viGlobal/Aderant platform.
  • Previous experience with law firm Learning Management Systems and other relevant development technologies and tools.

EDUCATION, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE

Qualified candidates will have a bachelor's degree and a minimum of eight years of manager-level or higher experience in attorney personnel management or evaluation, attorney professional development, or a relevant field, including working collaboratively in a multi-office law firm. Candidates will also have experience supervising others, managing projects, developing policies, and delivering training.

This position may be filled in the following location(s). The compensation depends on qualifications and experience.

Colorado compensation range: $130,740 to $206,700 annually

Los Angeles compensation range: $152,250 to $240,720 annually

New York State compensation range: $151,700 to $239,840 annually

San Diego compensation range: $150,320 to $237,660 annually

San Francisco compensation range: $166,870 to $263,830

Washington State compensation range: $137,910 to $218,040 annually
