Under the direction, guidance and general supervision of the Language Services Supervisor, this position is responsible for providing interpreter services during face-to-face clinic visits as well as appointments completed via phone and video, along with outreach and follow-up to members for arranging appointments, interpretation, translation, and facilitating transportation. The incumbent provides backup support to Community Health, Patient Care Services, Member Services, Quality Management, Health Education and Disease Management programs, and the BadgerCare Plus/Medicaid Contract program to ensure that GHC-SCW meets clinical and service goals as well as the goals set forth in the DHSS-SHC Medicaid Contract. This position collaborates with community organizations in the Madison area, such as Latino Health Council, Centro Hispano, The Hmong Institute, Madison Metropolitan School District, and professional organizations like the Dane County Medical Interpreters Coalition.

  1. High school education or equivalent is required. Post high school education is desirable.
  2. Six (6) months to one (1) year experience providing medical interpretation services, or equivalent is required. Experience in an acute care or clinic setting is highly desirable.
  3. Certified Healthcare Interpreter - (CCHI) or Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) certification is preferred. CCHI or CMI certification within 6 months of employment is required.
  4. For Spanish, familiarity with different dialects or regional variations of the Spanish language in order to facilitate better communication with the target audience.
  5. Experience translating relevant foreign language to English and English to relevant foreign language as well as proofreading translations in both languages is highly desirable.
  6. Possession of a valid State of Wisconsin Driver license, access to a vehicle, and the ability to travel is required.
  7. Access to telephone line for work is required.
  8. Ability to provide simultaneous, and consecutive interpretation and sight translation in person and over the phone or video and to switch interpreting modes as needed.
  9. Ability to work effectively with a diverse patient population is required.
  10. Excellent customer services skills are required. Ability to be culturally sensitive and approach patients and others in a non-intimidating and supportive manner, and the ability to represent GHC-SCW in a professional and compassionate manner is required.
  11. Working knowledge of or ability to learn basic rules and procedures of the Badger Care Plus program is required.
  12. Ability to maintain organizational and patient confidentiality. Knowledge and/or ability to learn HIPAA requirements.
  13. Knowledge of or ability to learn and use various computer programs including word processing, email, scheduling/calendar and databases is required.
  14. Willingness to learn the use of Computerized Appointment Scheduling system through EPIC and the electronic medical record for documentation (either Hyperspace using the Community Health encounter or through CRMs) is required.
  15. Excellent problem solving and organizational skills are required.
  16. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  17. Ability to listen, trouble-shoot, and be flexible is required.
  18. Ability to work efficiently and under stressful situations and harmoniously and cooperatively with the public and all GHC-SCW personnel is required.
  19. Ability to understand and work closely with community contacts and resources is required.
  20. Ability to function independently in order to meet organizational goals is required.
  21. Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet customer needs is required.
