Job Description
Supervisor: Chief Program and Development Officer
Department: Administration                                                                 Full Time Equivalent: 70% to 100%
 
ORGANIZATION & DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
 
The mission of the Urban League of Greater Madison is to ensure that African Americans and other community members are educated, employed and empowered to live well, advance professionally and contribute to the common good in the 21st Century. The three strands of our empowerment agenda include: (1) Educate – learning and enrichment programs for youth; (2) Employ: career-pathway job training, placement, and coaching services for parents and other low-income adults and; (3) Empower: community engagement, advocacy, partnerships and coalition building initiatives.

The Development and Communications Director is part of the ULGM’s Administration Team. The Development and Communications Director will work in partnership with executive management, program management, and other development personnel including the Grant Development Specialist and the Events Manager.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Development and Communications Director will provide leadership, strategic initiative, and management of our multi-faceted fund-raising efforts including events, corporate sponsorship, direct mail, and other approaches to increase the League's financial support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other sources. The Director will support the development work of the Executive Leadership Team and operate in partnership with other development staff including the Grant Specialist, Events Manager, and Volunteer Coordinator. The Development and Communications Director will also assist with communication activities to help cultivate and steward existing and prospective new donors.

In particular, we seek a Development and Communications Director who can enhance our stewardship efforts with existing individual donors and coordinate the efforts of executive staff and board to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward new small, medium, and major donations from individuals
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Planning: Work closely with Executive Leadership Team and other development staff to set fundraising goals, create an annual fundraising plan, coordinate its execution, and evaluate its effectiveness; Monitor progress toward the annual fundraising goals through various reports and management of fundraising dashboard; attend and participate in Fund Development Committee meetings; Explore opportunities for planned giving, earned income and other revenue generating opportunities; Enhance organizational fundraising capacity by providing tools and training to staff and board members so they can more effectively support fundraising activities.

Major Gifts: Identify and pursue contribution and sponsorship opportunities with individuals, businesses, foundations, faith communities, and other sources; Work closely with Executive Leadership to develop and sustain a major donor program including prospecting, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities; Identify and research prospects; Provide administrative support to the development efforts of the Executive Leadership Team including scheduling and preparing for meetings and managing donor follow-up. Organize cultivation and recognition events.

Small & Medium Gifts: Manage small and medium individual donor support through direct mail, website, social media, events, and other vehicles; Ensure a “ladder of giving” to move donors from initial gifts to major gifts; Work closely with Events Coordinator to organize events that support fund development goals, including awareness-oriented events and fundraisers.

Information Management: Supervise data input and data integrity in the development database (eTapestry); Track activities such as donor and prospect contact information, pledges and gifts; Reconcile donor and financial records; Manage mailing lists; Track pledges; Produce fundraising reports and manage fundraising dashboard; Ensure donor acknowledgements and tax receipting; Research prospects; Document gift processing and database management policies and processes.

Communications: Assist in the development and implementation of an integrated communications plan to advance the Urban League brand identity, increase understanding of our programs and priorities, and increase awareness of opportunities to give; Create appeal letters and other annual giving materials; Create acknowledgment letter templates for annual giving and special event donations; Create inspirational articles and other content for print and electronic channels; Garner pro bono communication services, skilled volunteers, and interns to support development and communications efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS
 
 
  • At least five (5) years of fund development or related experience.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Strong commitment to the missions of the Urban League of Greater Madison and to working with individuals from diverse racial/cultural backgrounds.
  • Proven track record of taking initiative to achieve revenue targets.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, prospect, cultivate, and manage new donors.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills with demonstrated ability to express oneself clearly and persuasively.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • High energy, positive, “can-do” attitude. High level of professionalism. High expectations for quality.
  • Must have strong time management skills and the ability to balance multiple tasks.
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Technical proficiency with office equipment and computer software products, including Microsoft Office, social media, internet, and email.
  • Experience with eTapestry or other donor management system is a plus.
  • Must have own transportation.

$45,000 to $50,000
