Description

Lutheran Social Services of WI & Upper MI is currently seeking a English/Social Studies Teacher for grades 6-12 to provide onsite education to the residents at Homme Youth and Family Programs in Wittenberg, WI. Homme Youth and Family Programs is a residential facility for at-risk male youth 10-21 years old. The Visions Junior/Senior High School develops and implements individual education programs for each troubled-youth to meet his educational needs. Visions offers small class sizes and an adult-to-student ratio of 1:5.

This is a full-time, benefit eligible opportunity with a traditional teaching schedule and the option to also pick up summer school if desired.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.
* Instructs students' in a classroom setting, in small groups, and on individual basis in academic and nonacademic subjects.
* Monitors the progress and performance of students in class activities while adjusting educational programming to meet individual needs.
* Prepares detailed lesson plans.
* Maintains order and discipline within the school setting and facility.
* Participates in staff meetings providing insights into the activities in the classroom and the student's reactions to that environment.
* Directs the work of non-professional teaching staff assigned to the school.
* Prepares detailed and complex reports concerning students' progress in academic and social skill areas.
* Establishes and maintains effective working and public relationships.
* Acts as liaison with local public school officials assisting students in their return to public schools.
* Participates as a member of a quality team and interacts with primary, external, and internal customers of the agency in such a way that the customer experiences increasing quality.
* Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
* A Bachelor's degree in education is required with an emphasis in special education.
* Professional work experience as a teacher; experience dealing with children with special educational or social needs is preferred.
* Knowledge of modern principles and practices used in teaching students.
* Knowledge of social behaviors encountered in residential facilities.
* Knowledge of the educational delivery system and the resources available to assist the education of students.
* Working knowledge of social work principles, techniques, and practices.
* Ability to deal with difficult students, including safety techniques and practices.
* Ability to plan a detailed course of study for students tailored to meet special educational and social needs.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective public and working relationships.
* Ability to serve as a positive role model.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
* Must have a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation to perform the essential duties of the role; a motor vehicle check (MVR) with a satisfactory driving record per the LSS Driver Safety Procedure is required, and ability to meet LSS auto insurance requirements.
* Certification or eligibility to receive certification and/or licenser, as a teacher from the appropriate authority is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to communicate both in verbal and written format, effectively and efficiently in job.
Must possess the ability to read, write, analyze, and interpret data to complete all required intervention and goal process documentation by established timeframes; must be able to write progress reports and clearly communicate to referring agencies the effectiveness of services; must be able to accurately, legibly, objectively and consistently document the services provided; must have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of employees, managers, directors and executive leadership.

REASONING ABILITY
Employee must possess the ability to creatively solve problems appropriately using past experience, reading, writing, and math skills; have the ability to use patience, self-control and flexibility when required; have the ability to accept and follow through with direction; and possess the ability to recognize boundaries. The employee must be a team member who can suggest and implement strategies to enhance services.


COMPUTER SKILLS/TECHNOLOGY:
Working knowledge of computers to allow employee to access computer systems and applications to complete timecards, read and respond to email, and complete required on-line training.

Able to use technology that is necessary to perform job responsibilities; use available technology effectively (voicemail, computer, printer, photocopier, scanner, fax and telephone, and various types of audio visual equipment)

TRAVEL: Ability to travel on day trips as required up to 10%. Some overnight travel may be required.
