Job Description
Scientific Protein Laboratories is a biopharmaceutical leader in the development and manufacturing of heparin, pancreatin, heparin derivatives, naturally derived pharmaceuticals, and recombinant proteins from microbial fermentation. We have an immediate opening in Waunakee, WI (Madison area) for a Lead EHS Specialist
 
The EHS Specialist works under the direction of the Manager of EH&S to coordinate, implement, and facilitate programs designed to comply with OSHA, EPA, DNR, SPL, and corporate environmental, health, and safety directives.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • On a daily basis, monitors the facility activities for compliance with policy and regulatory requirements (i.e., OSHA, EPA, DNR, and SPL).
  • Manages plant-wide PSM program changes, improvements and implements Company PSM policies, procedures for decimation to plant employees and contractors as required.
  • Works with Engineers and EHS Manager to help ensure plant stays in compliance with OSHA 1910.119 Process Safety Management.
  • Conducts environmental, health, and safety audits at SPL and is responsible for safety oversight at SPL.  Tracks follow-up activities to corporate and divisional audits; prepares periodic status reports on these audit responses.
  • Arranges, coordinates, facilitates, and conducts employee safety training on an appropriate schedule and appropriately documents training programs, including but not necessarily limited to:  bloodborne pathogens, HAZCOM, ergonomics, contractors, sub-contractors, lockout/tag-out, confined space, forklift, etc.
  • Writes and edits Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as needed to support environmental, safety, and health programs including researching CFR regulations and transferring these requirements into standard practice.
  • Advisor to SPL Safety Committee and interfaces between the committee and management as needed.
  • Monitors compliance status of facility emergency systems, including but not necessarily limited to:  evacuation plan, First Responders, etc.
  • Coordinates and/or conducts required pre-startup safety reviews.  Also reviews contract employee safe work practices and compliance with SPL policy.
  • Performs respirator fit testing, maintains a selection of proper respirators, and compiles documentation for respirator program.
  • Oversees maintenance of SDS sheets for entire facility.
  • Maintains OSHA accident/incident reporting log and SPL accident/incident reports along with EHS portion of Worker's Compensation form.
  • Must be able to work overtime or extended shifts on occasion.
  • Carries out duties in a timely manner and is proactive to assure a strong regulatory compliance atmosphere.
  • Conducts other projects and performs other duties as directed by department responsible management.
 
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education:  
 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Safety Engineering or related field is required
  • ASP with ability to achieve CSP or equivalent is preferred
Experience:  
 
  • Previous experience with a regulatory agency or in manufacturing environment desirable; minimum 1-5 years of safety-related activities and responsibility.
  • Previous cGMP experience desirable.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in math, reading, and writing skills and attention to detail required.
  • Technological proficiency, specifically in Excel and Word preferred
  • Experience with the EPA, WDNR (air and water), and OSHA regulations is preferred.
