Job Description
Job Summary:

As the world population grows, proactive and innovative strategies to efficiently produce high quality animal protein in a sustainable way are essential. Sustainability is a tripartite challenge that includes key environmental, economic, and social considerations. Adaptability and resilience to environmental challenges, such as rising temperatures, water shortages, weather extremes, and strained ecosystems will be critical in feeding a growing global population while confronting climate change. Adaptability and resilience to management challenges, such as shortages of skilled labor, disruptions in supply chains, changes in consumer preferences, and revisions to regulatory policies, will also be important in the coming decades.

To help address these issues, the Dairy Innovation Hub seeks to fund a full time 9-month tenure-track faculty position to build an internationally recognized and extramurally funded research program that focuses on adaptive dairy cattle nutrition and an impactful teaching program. "Adaptive" refers to the ability of dairy calves, heifers, and cows to achieve and maintain optimal health and performance in the face of these and other unforeseen external challenges and in ways that are sustainable and efficient. The field of animal nutrition is evolving rapidly, in terms of the forages, concentrates, and alternative feedstuffs that can be used to produce milk and meat efficiently under varying environmental conditions and constraints, and in terms of our understanding of the interactions of nutrition with immunology, metabolic health, reproduction, longevity, behavior, and welfare. These factors contribute to maintaining the dairy industry's social license to operate by enhancing animal health and welfare while capitalizing on the ability of ruminants to consume and convert non-human-edible plants, industry byproducts, and food waste, into nourishing proteins to feed the human population. Consideration of the animal's entire lifespan, from fetal programming through calf rearing, heifer management, and mature cow health and performance, will be critical in addressing adaptability and resilience in a holistic manner. Broadly speaking, this individual will carry out impactful research, teaching, and outreach activities that, from a nutritional and interdisciplinary perspective, will allow dairy cattle and dairy farmers to achieve predictable quality and performance under unpredictable conditions.

This newly created position is supported by the Dairy Innovation Hub in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and carries a commitment to the three functions of research, instruction, outreach, as well as professional and university service as appropriate to the position and rank. The Hub is an exciting initiative at the three leading UW agricultural schools (UW- Madison, UW-Platteville, and UW-River Falls) to foster dairy research, education, and outreach in the priority areas of Stewarding Land and Water Resources, Ensuring Animal Health and Welfare, Growing Farm Businesses and Communities, and Enriching Human Health and Nutrition. The Assistant Professor will join a world-class university and a college with diverse expertise in agricultural and life sciences. The incumbent's tenure home will be the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty in the department, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, USDA Dairy Forage Research Center, and across campus. The Wisconsin dairy sector has a strong collaborative relationship with the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is highly motivated to help explore and develop innovative solutions to the industry's challenges. As a Hub supported position, the faculty member will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other Hub researchers, pursue Hub funding opportunities, and participate in Hub programs. For more information on the Dairy Innovation Hub () and UW-Madison CALS Hub efforts () please visit the websites.

The Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences is committed to collaborative research, innovative instruction, and outreach to foster scientific discoveries, produce skilled leaders, and advance animal agriculture and sustainable food systems to enrich the lives of students, scientists, stakeholders, and society. Research expertise across disciplines contributes to core strengths in the areas of integrated dairy sciences, sustainable livestock production systems, and meat science and animal biologics. Diverse research facilities enable nearly all types of research, with on-campus facilities including the Dairy Cattle Center, Livestock Lab, and Meat Science and Animal Biologics Discovery (MSABD) Building all located within short walking distance of the research labs. A 600-cow dairy research facility, as well as beef, sheep, and swine research facilities, are located 30 minutes from campus (Arlington, WI), and a dairy heifer research unit 2 hours from campus (Marshfield, WI) and beef unit 1.5 hours from campus (Lancaster, WI) are also available. Collaborations across campus, the Dairy Innovation Hub, and with countless industry and stakeholder partners will result in leveraging expertise, farms, and laboratory facilities.

Additionally, the Department has a long-standing collaboration with the US Dairy Forage Research Center (USDFRC), a research center of the US Department of Agriculture devoted to the optimization of the use of forages in improving dairy cattle production and sustainability. Experts in soil chemistry, agronomy, dairy cattle genetics, dairy nutrition, and microbiology work on long-term, interdisciplinary research projects aimed at developing cost-effective solutions for US dairy farmers. The center is located on the UW-Madison campus and maintains research dairy herds at Prairie du Sac, WI and Marshfield, WI. This network of research, outreach and instruction units uniquely positions Wisconsin as a center of dairy stewardship innovation in the 21st Century.
