The Scrum Master is accountable for establishing Scrum as defined in the Scrum Guide. This role will help the team, leaders, and the organization, understand Scrum theory and practice. They will be accountable for the Scrum Team's effectiveness through continuous improvement of practices, skill development, understanding, and feedback. This position will work with Agility Enablement to ensure that Scrum practices align with overall organizational business agility goals and will supplement Scrum with Kanban where necessary to reach product and organizational goals. In addition to Scrum expertise, we value your understanding of Kanban principles and flow metrics.

Responsibilities
  • Scrum Team Coaching
    • Coach the team members in self-management and cross functionality.
    • Guide the team focusing on creating high-value increments that meet the Definition of Done.
    • Cause the removal of impediments to the Scrum Team's progress to increase the effectiveness.
    • Ensure that all Scrum events take place and are positive and productive. Lead the team focus on Sprint Goals as a mechanism for value delivery.
    • Models the Scrum values of commitment, focus, openness, respect, and courage.
  • Kanban Integration
    • Apply Kanban principles to optimize workflow and visualize work items.
    • Collaborate with the team to establish policies and WIP (work in process) limits.
    • Leverage Kanban boards to manage WIP and improve flow.
    • Utilize Flow Metrics to improve stability and predictability of the team's work.
  • Product Owner Coaching
    • Find techniques for effective Product Goal definition and Product Backlog management.
    • Guide the Scrum Team to understand the need for clear and concise Product Backlog items.
    • Drive to establish empirical product planning for a complex environment.
    • Facilitate stakeholder collaboration as requested or needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of education requirement
  • 5 years of experience of related experience
  • Must have experience in establishing Scrum as defined by the Scrum Guide within at least one organization
  • Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) or equivalent certification; PSM II, PSK (Professional Scrum w/Kanban), and/or Kanban Management Professional (KMP is preferred
  • Preferred Experiences:
    • Experience and techniques in both Agile and Project Management
    • Scrum Master for multiple teams in multiple organizations
    • Experience with other agile frameworks (Disciplined Agile, XP, Crystal Clear)
    • Understanding of flow metrics (WIP, Cycle time, Throughput, Work Item Age)
    • Experience with agile scaling approaches (Large Scale Scrum-LeSS, Scaled Agile-SAFe, Nexus)
    • Experience in health insurance, healthcare industry, and/or regulatory requirements in the health insurance domain
  • Understanding of Kanban principles and flow metrics
  • Exemplifies and promotes Agile values and principles
  • Outstanding communication, facilitation, negotiation, and coaching skills
  • Intermediate working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Proven knowledge of the application of agile at scale and proven ability to coach and lead the cultural and organizational change to make it work
  • Knowledge and practical experience of agile and Lean frameworks, values, and practices including, but not limited to systems thinking, theory of constraints, flow metrics, pull systems, value delivery, psychological safety, etc.
  • Demonstrated fluency in agile and lean values and principles
  • Demonstrated ability to influence people at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrates openness and curiosity as a way of enabling change, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach

This position can work 100% remotely or from our office in Madison, WI in a hybrid or full-time on-site arrangement, if preferred. Hardware and equipment will be provided by the company, but candidates must have access to high-speed, non-satellite Internet to successfully work from home.
