Job Summary:

University Marketing is hiring a seasoned UX/UI designer to create highly usable and accessible experiences that achieve the University's institutional goals in a digital context.

University Marketing creates websites that serve the entire UW-Madison campus. The university's gateway site (), the campus news site , and alumni magazine are a few of the web properties in our portfolio. Our ideal candidate will embrace user-centered design practices to understand target audiences and translate organizational goals into highly usable and accessible digital experiences like these.

The UX/UI Designer will play a key role in establishing and maintaining a digital design system for campus, including the development of a block-based WordPress theme.

Responsibilities: Provides strategic and operational direction and leads the research, architecture, and design of highly complex systems, services, and content to support user needs, meet project goals, and advance institutional priorities. Trains staff and serves as an expert level resource.
  • 10% Designs and conducts comprehensive and ongoing research with users to understand context and needs, utilizing methods such as ethnographic/field research, interviews, usability testing, and surveys
  • 5% Analyzes, synthesizes, and communicates research data and metrics to inform policy, services, content, and interaction design
  • 50% Designs complex information architectures, user flows, interfaces, prototypes, design patterns/systems, content strategies, and services
  • 15% Leads the design and execution of training, facilitation, and outreach materials, and researches and designs best practices to promote the use of user-centered, accessible practices at the institution
  • 10% Advises internal stakeholders on user-centered and accessible strategies
  • 10% Identifies, promotes, and maintains relationships with various stakeholder groups at the unit, institution, and peer level to foster awareness of a subject matter domain
Tasks:
  • Leverages user-centered design practices to understand target audiences and translate organizational goals into highly usable and accessible digital experiences.
  • Serves as UX lead for UW-branded digital design system: both initial build of blocks, patterns, and templates and continuous improvements including new patterns and components.
  • Produces clear, actionable guidelines that help designers, developers, and content specialists understand UW digital design system and how to use it.
  • Builds collaborative relationships with campus colleagues and demonstrates UX design leadership within a decentralized organization.
  • Maintains and updates the design system's library and assets.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED:
- Minimum two years' relevant professional experience in a UX/UI position.
- Excellent understanding of UX principles and user-centered design practices.
- Ability to create inclusive, accessible tools for a diverse user population.
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders.
- Strong understanding of digital design systems.
- Excellent research/interviewing and communication skills.
- Ability to analyze research findings to make design recommendations.
- Ability to convey a strategic vision to colleagues to improve upon the goals of the
website.
- Ability to work independently and with a team to meet deadlines.
- Excellent organizational and multitasking skills.

PREFERRED:
- Proficient with Figma or similar prototyping/design tool.
- Strong understanding of WordPress, including Gutenberg block editor.
- Strong understanding of graphic design and brand execution; well-versed in typography,
color theory, layout, and hierarchy.
- Experience organizing, structuring, and thoughtfully labeling content so that users can
discover and traverse information effectively.
- Experience working with stakeholders across a large and complex organization.
- Solid understanding of copywriting for SEO, usability, and accessibility.
- Have a base level understanding of front-end implementation (HTML, CSS) and/or the
desire to learn and grow this skillset.
