Job Summary: To preserve and maintain the Zoo's outward appearance by keeping Zoo clean, mow grass and trim, and snow removal. To deliver animal food, animal bedding, and remove animal waste. To assist with moving of Zoo's animal collection, satisfy zoo's interdepartmental requests such as relocating furniture, light remodeling and improvements, and special event set ups and care. It also assists in maintaining our small equipment as well as our large equipment. Operate equipment to load, unload trucks, transport items throughout the park, and landscaping. To provide the heavy lifting, backbone of the behind-the-scenes services to all of the zoo's departments.

Work Schedule: Ability to regularly work early morning, mid-day, evenings, and weekends as needed.

Job Responsibilities:

  • General Cleanup of Zoo Grounds - Removes garbage from trash bins, picks up litter, and uses blower to clean walkways. Uses pressure washer to clean up stained concrete and to clean garbage cans.
  • Snow Removal - Uses various snow removal equipment and shovels to remove snow from drives and walkways. Spread salt to prevent accidents.
  • Leaf Removal - Collect leaves and clear roof drains and gutters during fall months. Uses various blowing and collection equipment to remove fallen leaves from the Zoo during the Fall season.
  • Assist in building and repair of wood fencing.
  • Perform minor repairs and improvements of grounds and grounds equipment: Spread woodchips or other landscape materials in Zoo. Repair picnic tables, benches, fences, damaged turf, equipment and build various types of wood fencing. Dig holes, install signs in the ground, paint anything needed to improve the park appearance. Assist with propping and animal exhibit landscaping and improvement work. Minor repairs to vehicles. Light, in-house repairs to our buildings, garages, and other facilities and structures.
  • Assist Horticulture and Forestry - Assist in removing fallen trees, help plant trees, help with landscaping, including spreading topsoil and mulch. Assist with using a woodchipper to clear cut branches. Assist in removal of invasives and then replanting/reforesting cleared areas.
  • Assist Vehicle Machine Operators - Assist Vehicle Machine Operators with food delivery, animal bedding, animal waste removal, load/unload deliveries, use forklift to transport/load/unload, and various other duties- assist with cleaning and maintaining vocal screens and box of animal waste, grease and clean all equipment, skids, forklift, and heavy equipment.
  • Attends meetings and completes all required training. On rare occasions, the Grounds Worker may be required to assist custodial staff.
  • Properly and safely operate pickup trucks, golf carts, utility vehicles, forklifts, blowers, pressure washers, basic hand tools, lawn cutting equipment and snow removal equipment.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Other duties as assigned: Includes attending meetings and completing all required training. On rare occasions, may be required to assist EVS (custodial) staff. Assist in training, leading and mentoring seasonal staff. Various light remodeling and improvement tasks such as building and installing shelving, building structures for animal enrichment, install flooring, light carpentry work, and other light construction projects as needed. Use power hand tools, haul material using box truck and a truck and trailer. Collect "browse" for animal feeding/enrichment. Operate skid steer to be more efficient completing any assigned tasks. Operate essentially as a moving company for moving various large, heavy and all items needed from buildings, basements, offices, etc.

Required Education, License/Certification and Experience

  • Current residency within the State of Wisconsin required.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License required and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook programs required.
  • Previous grounds maintenance work experience preferred.
  • Previous work experience in landscaping or lawn services preferred.
  • Previous work experience in snow removal preferred.
  • Previous work experience in general building maintenance preferred.
  • Previous work experience or ability to fix small engines or vehicles preferred.
